Kate and Rory’s Mars Gallery Wedding!

Kate and Rory’s music infused Mars Gallery wedding was held last Fall and was nothing short of funky and eclectic-just like the couple! Kate and Rory met in Chicago 7 years ago and have been through lots of life changing events together including Rory’s cross-country walk in 2008. On their first date, Kate explained that “Rory barely spoke 2 words to me” and later she found out that it was because he was “taken” by her. Too cute. The day started at the Allerton Hotel with Kate, and at the Affina Hotel with Rory to capture some prep shots in downtown Chicago. After our first meet at the Allerton, my second shooter Torie, and myself drove around the industrial corridor with couple to shoot around the area full of murals, factories and great graffiti. The short 15 minute ceremony was followed by delicious food from Conn’s Catering along with a Chicago themed candy bar. The music was led by none other than Jeffrey Parker of Tortoise who had everyone in the place dancing all night long! Thanks to Kate and Rory for such a fabulous day, and to Torie McMillan for her awesome shots!

Wednesday Inspiration- Engagement Picture Locations

May 9th, 2012

For engagement sessions, I always tell my client’s to think of locations, neighborhoods, places of interest, or landmarks that have meaning to them as a couple and convey their personalized style. We all collaborate on several locations and decide which are the best to create some lasting memories of the couple’s time before the wedding. Industrial, graffiti, restaurants, apple orchards, architectural or city neighborhoods all serve as fantastic settings for any engagement shoot and offer a unique story. Below are some very creative examples from my past clients of different locations and themes that were not only a blast to photograph, but also reflected the couple’s personality. Chicago Botanic Gardens was our rustic backdrop for Kelly and Kevin's Fall session.

Nok and Kevin wanted their shoot to be photographed inside Kevin's school where he teaches in the City of Chicago Public School District.

A great mural is always a wonderful choice for a backdrop! This picture was shoot in the Meat Packing district of Chicago.

For Kate and Rory's session, we brought along some paint to decorate the alley couch! Near the Montrose L stop, Chicago.

The Chicago skyline is perfect for any couple who loves the city and modern architecture.

First date locations are always fun and memorable places for any engagement shoot. This pic was shot at a restaurant near Wrigley Field, and where Lyuda and Vivek had their first date.

Colorful backdrops and funky storefronts were the perfect setting for Amanda and Jason's Chinatown shoot!

We all traveled to an apple orchard in Wisconsin for this Fall engagement shoot which offered some great country backgrounds.

Wedding Trend Watch-Beautifully Crafted Backdrops

Today’s trend is all about adding overall ambiance and creativity to your wedding reception or special event. And about infusing a little DIY in the process! Right now, backdrops are created with so many different materials, shapes, sizes and colors, the options are endless. Backdrops can make a drab wall bright with color, or a dark room romantic and warm. Paper, frames, birdcages, balloons, hanging flowers and lights can be crafted into beautiful decor and create a memorable setting.
